It appears that the delete-message functionality is pretty limited: only the recipient can delete a message, and then it disappears from the sender's message list as well. Is that correct? It would be really nice if each player could independently delete a message without it affecting the other player. Possible?

It's not possible at this moment, I'm thinking to improve and optimize the messaging system later, I'll have to think a good way to support your request without duplicating the record in database (and eventually optimize the current management of messages to multiple recipients). But since it's a busy period in game development for me at this time, I have no ETA for this (anyway not any soon).
