When I manually create a user using the admin back-end, the user cannot log in through Unity. The password seems to be stored in plain text in the database, could this be the issue?

That's exactly the bug, I've fixed it. If you need it now then I'll send the correct file to you by email else you can wait for the next update (some day before end of current month).
